Homemade Moisturizer For Melasma, Hyperpigmentation, and Acne Scars
Anyone with skin issues like melasma, hyperpigmentation, or acne scars knows how difficult it is to deal with on an emotional level, but also how incredibly stubborn these skin issues can be to treat. In the past, I've personally dealt with acne, acne scars, and severe melasma that covered almost my entire face, so I know exactly how you feel.
You can read more about my experience in overcoming melasma (and acne scars) in this post and this post.
When my melasma was at it's worst, I did a lot of reading and googling for answers for how to treat the dark spots on my skin. As far as skincare goes, everything that was recommended were treatments like lightening creams, kojic acid, or chemical peels. But it seemed like the more intense the skincare products were that I used to try to treat the melasma, the worse my skin looked.
If peels and harsh scrubs made my skin worse, then maybe what my skin needed was the opposite of that? Maybe it needed gentle, nourishing skincare AND time to heal?!
So, I decided to go back to basics with my skincare routine. I started using only natural, organic, and gentle skincare. I washed my face with healing oils, only used gentle exfoliators once a week, and used zinc sunscreen and wore a hat when spending time outdoors.
Part of my skincare routine was using this Natural Homemade Moisturizer that I made from nourishing, healing oils that are gentle on skin and helpful for treating dark spots and acne scars.
Natural Homemade Moisturizer For Melasma, Hyperpigmentation, and Acne Scars
Ingredients:
Base oil - I recommend Almond oil, Argan Oil, or Jojoba oil
Rosehip Seed Oil - both rosehip and tamanu are known to be very healing to the skin. Rosehip seed oil contains nourishing and ani-inflammatory fatty acids plus Vitamin C and Vitamin A, great for anti-aging and brightening skin tone
Tamanu Oil - tamanu is great for healing acne scars (or any scars), age spots, anti-aging
Directions:
I don't measure the ingredients. but rough estimates:
45% Base Oil - Jojoba Oil
40% Rosehip Seed oil
10% Tamanu Oil (thick so a little goes a long way)
5% Vitamin E
You can simply adjust the amounts for your needs. If its too thick, try using more of the base oil and less Tamanu or Vitamin E.
Add all ingredients to the Glass Dropper Bottle
Gently roll the bottle between your hands to blend the oils together
Apply this natural moisturizer after cleansing and using a facial toner, morning and night
Healing my melasma was definitely the biggest motivation for changing my lifestyle and skincare, but I was so happy that as a result of the changes I made, my skin healed in other ways too. The acne scars, that had been stubborn for so many years, were also fading!
I get a lot of questions about how I healed my melasma. It honestly wasn't just one thing that helped my melasma fade. It was a lot of little things that eventually made a difference in my skin. You can read more about it in this post I wrote, 5 Things I Did to Heal Melasma Naturally. This is a journey I'm still on but the improvements I've seen in my skin have been well worth the effort.
I'm an open book when it comes to my skin issues, and if I can share anything that will help others, then I'm happy to do it!
